Grief asks a great deal of us. It can leave us feeling physically exhausted, emotionally drained and mentally overwhelmed. Some days, simply getting through the day is enough. If that's where you are today, please know that you're doing better than you think.
There may be washing to put away. Letters waiting to be opened. Phone calls to make. Jobs around the house that never seem to end. It can all feel overwhelming. You don't have to do everything today. Choose one thing. Then, if you feel able, choose another. Small steps are still steps forward.
Grief is tiring. Even when you've done very little, you may feel completely worn out. That's because grief is hard work. Your heart and mind are adjusting to a life that has changed. If you need to rest, then rest. Your body is asking for what it needs.
Many of us are kinder to other people than we are to ourselves. If someone you loved was grieving, you wouldn't expect them to be strong every minute of every day. You wouldn't criticise them for needing a quiet afternoon or an early night. Offer yourself that same compassion. You deserve it too.
You don't have to accept every invitation. You don't have to answer every message immediately. You don't have to explain why today feels difficult. Protecting your energy isn't selfish. It's part of healing.
Some days will feel lighter. Others may feel just as painful as the day before. That doesn't mean you're failing. Healing rarely happens in a straight line. Even on the hardest days, you're still moving forward. One breath. One hour. One day at a time.
"Be as gentle with yourself as you would be with someone you love. You deserve that same kindness."
You don't have to earn the right to rest. Grief is one of life's heaviest burdens. Looking after yourself isn't giving upโit's giving yourself the care you need to keep going.
If today has felt like too much, let that be enough for today. The washing can wait. The emails can wait. Tomorrow can wait. Right now, simply being here is enough. Take good care of yourself. We'll be here whenever you need another quiet moment.
