Choosing a date and time for the funeral is an important part of the arrangements.
Before confirming the funeral date, it's worth considering:
- Family members travelling long distances.
- Work, school or university commitments.
- Previously booked holidays.
- Religious or cultural requirements.
- Hospital or care home delays.
- Availability of the crematorium or cemetery, funeral director, minister or celebrant.
- Completion of any necessary medical or legal paperwork.
Taking a little time to discuss these with close family members can help avoid unnecessary stress later.
Leave the booking to your Funeral Director as your funeral director coordinates all aspects of the funeral and will need to check the availability of:
- The funeral team.
- Funeral vehicles.
- The cemetery or crematorium.
- The minister or celebrant.
- Bearers and other staff.
Making arrangements independently may lead to clashes or delays if the funeral director is unavailable or another part of the funeral cannot be accommodated.

Sometimes your preferred date may not be available. Being flexible with the day or time may allow you to secure your preferred minister, celebrant, venue or funeral director.
Can the funeral be rearranged?
Sometimes, yes. However, changing the date after it has been confirmed may affect the availability of the minister, crematorium, cemetery, funeral vehicles or other services. If you think the date may need to change, speak to your funeral director as soon as possible.
