Some deaths must be referred to the Coroner before a funeral can take place. This usually happens when the cause of death is unknown, the death was sudden or unexpected, occurred as the result of an accident or injury, or there are legal reasons why further investigation is required. The Coroner is an independent judicial office holder who investigates certain deaths to establish who has died, and when, where and how they died. Not every death referred to the Coroner will require a post-mortem examination or an inquest. If the Coroner becomes involved, they will explain the process and keep the next of kin informed of any decisions that affect the funeral arrangements.

Website:https://www.essex.gov.uk/births-ceremonies-and-deaths/coroners
Opening Hours: Monday to Friday, 9:00am – 4:00pm
Description: The East London Coroner Service investigates deaths that fall within the Coroner's legal jurisdiction, including deaths occurring in the London Borough of Havering. The service works closely with medical examiners, hospitals, the police and bereaved families where further investigation is required.
A death referred to the Coroner does not necessarily mean that a post-mortem examination or an inquest will take place. In many cases, the Coroner is able to establish the cause of death without either being necessary.
If you have appointed a funeral director, they will liaise with the Coroner's Office on your behalf and keep you informed of any updates.
Before a funeral can usually take place, the death must be registered with the local Register Office. In most cases, this should be done within five days of the death (unless the Coroner is involved).
The Register Office will issue the documents needed to proceed with funeral arrangements and can provide certified copies of the death certificate if required.
Appointments are normally required, so it's advisable to book in advance where possible.

Description: Havering Register Office registers deaths that have occurred within the London Borough of Havering. Appointments can be booked online or by telephone. The registrar will explain the registration process and issue the necessary documents for funeral arrangements.
Before attending your appointment, make sure you have been told that the Medical Certificate of Cause of Death (MCCD) has been completed and sent to the Register Office (or that the Coroner has authorised the registration, if applicable). You should also bring identification if requested and any information you have about the person who has died. If you're unsure what you need, contact the Register Office before your appointment.
Many Register Offices now offer online appointment booking. Booking as soon as you're advised that the MCCD has been received can help avoid unnecessary delays to funeral arrangements.
If a loved one dies in hospital, the hospital's Bereavement Office will guide you through the next steps. They can help with the Medical Certificate of Cause of Death (MCCD), explain the registration process and answer questions about collecting personal belongings and making funeral arrangements.
