There comes a moment after a bereavement when the house becomes very quiet. The visitors have gone home. The flowers begin to fade. The phone rings less often. Life around you slowly returns to normal. But your home doesn't feel the same anymore. It can feel as though something is missing from every room. Because someone is.
Often, it isn't the big moments that catch us off guard. It's the ordinary ones. Making one cup of tea instead of two. Walking past their favourite chair. Hearing a floorboard creak and, for a split second, thinking they're coming into the room. Looking up when you hear a key in the door. These everyday moments can be some of the hardest.
Homes are filled with familiar sounds. A favourite television programme. Footsteps on the stairs. Someone calling your name. Even the quiet breathing of another person in the next room. When those sounds disappear, the silence can feel almost deafening .Many people find this one of the most difficult parts of grief.
Some people leave the television or radio on. Others find comfort in music. Some prefer complete silence. There isn't a right or wrong choice. Do whatever feels comforting to you.
You may avoid certain rooms. You may leave things exactly as they were. Or you may decide to make small changes over time. Every person grieves differently. There is no timetable for changing your surroundings. Only do what feels right for you.
Although the house may feel emptier now, it also holds years of memories. The laughter. The conversations. The celebrations. The ordinary days that quietly became precious. Those memories haven't gone. They've simply become part of the home in a different way.
"Love leaves its mark on the places we share. That's why an empty chair can say so much without saying anything at all."
An empty house doesn't mean an empty life. Right now, it may feel quiet beyond words, but in time you may find new moments of comfort alongside the memories that already live there.
If home feels especially quiet today, be gentle with yourself. You don't have to fill every silence. Sometimes it's enough simply to sit, remember and know that love leaves echoes in the places we once shared. Whenever you need a quiet moment, we'll be here.
