You may think you're coping well. Perhaps you've started to smile again. Maybe you're back at work or settling into a new routine. Then, without warning...A song plays. A familiar perfume drifts past. Someone says their name. You catch sight of their favourite biscuits in the supermarket. And suddenly, the tears come. If this has happened to you, please know it's completely normal. Grief has a way of arriving when we least expect it.

Memories are everywhere

The people we love leave traces throughout our lives. A favourite café. A holiday destination. A television programme you always watched together. The smell of fresh coffee .The sound of laughter that reminds you of theirs. These ordinary moments can become powerful reminders of someone who meant the world to you.

It doesn't mean you're going backwards

Many people worry that unexpected tears mean they're "back to square one." You're not. Grief isn't a straight path. It moves gently forwards, then circles back, then surprises us all over again. An emotional day doesn't undo all the progress you've made. It's simply one moment in your journey.

Let the moment be what it is

When grief catches you by surprise, try not to fight it. If tears come, let them come. If you need to pause for a few moments, that's okay. If you smile at the memory instead, that's okay too. There is no correct response. Only your response.

Even happy memories can make us cry

Sometimes it's not the sad memories that upset us. It's the happy ones. A holiday photograph. A funny story. A birthday celebration. A family gathering. The tears don't always come because the memory is painful. Sometimes they come because it was beautiful.

These moments become gentler

The unexpected waves of grief may never disappear completely. But many people find that, over time, they become less overwhelming. The memories begin to bring more smiles than tears. And although the longing remains, it sits more gently alongside everyday life.
