Help with Funeral Costs
Arranging a funeral can be one of the most difficult experiences a family faces, and the financial cost can add to an already stressful time. If you are worried about paying for a funeral, help may be available.
Funeral Expenses Payment (DWP)
The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) may be able to help with funeral costs through a Funeral Expenses Payment if you receive certain qualifying benefits and meet the eligibility criteria.
A Funeral Expenses Payment may help towards:
- Burial or cremation fees.
- Certain travel expenses.
- The cost of moving the deceased within the UK, where necessary.
- Up to £1,000 towards other funeral expenses, such as the funeral director's fees, coffin, or flowers.
Please note that this payment does not usually cover the full cost of a funeral, and any money available from the deceased's estate may need to be used to repay some or all of the payment.
Bereavement Support Payment
If your husband, wife or civil partner has died, you may be entitled to Bereavement Support Payment.
This payment is designed to provide financial support following the death of a partner. Although it is not specifically intended to pay funeral costs, it may help with living expenses during a difficult time.
Eligibility depends on your individual circumstances.
Public Health Funerals
If there is no family member, friend or other person willing or able to arrange a funeral, the local authority has a legal responsibility to arrange one.
These are known as Public Health Funerals and are available throughout England and Wales.
They are usually simple and dignified funerals arranged by the council where the person died. In most cases, they are cremations, although a burial may be provided where appropriate.
Charitable Grants
Some charities, benevolent funds and occupational organisations offer financial assistance towards funeral costs.
Support may be available if the deceased:
- Worked in a particular profession.
- Served in the Armed Forces.
- Was a member of a trade union or professional organisation.
- Had a medical condition supported by a specialist charity.
It is always worth asking your funeral director or contacting relevant charities to see whether help is available.
Paying from the Deceased's Bank Account
Many banks and building societies will release money directly from the deceased's account to pay a funeral director before probate has been granted.
Your funeral director can usually provide the invoice required by the bank.
Funeral Payment Plans
Most funeral directors offer payment options or instalment plans. If you are concerned about costs, ask for a clear written estimate before making any decisions.
Talk to the Funeral Director
A good funeral director will discuss your budget openly and explain the available options without pressure. There are many ways to arrange a meaningful and dignified funeral without unnecessary expense.
