Description: An independent cemetery serving East London communities, offering burial, cremation and memorial services in peaceful surroundings.
Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park is a historic cemetery and nature reserve rather than an operational burial ground. For new burials, cremations and memorial enquiries, families are generally directed to nearby cemeteries and crematoria such as the City of London Cemetery & Crematorium or Manor Park Cemetery.
Some deaths must be referred to the Coroner before funeral arrangements can proceed. This may happen if the cause of death is unknown, the death was sudden or unexpected, resulted from an accident or injury, or occurred in circumstances that require further investigation. The Coroner is an independent judicial office holder who investigates certain deaths to establish who has died, and when, where and how they died. Not every death referred to the Coroner will require a post-mortem examination or an inquest. If the Coroner becomes involved, they will explain the process and keep the next of kin informed of any decisions affecting funeral arrangements.

Families can arrange viewings by appointment and receive practical advice from the mortuary staff.
A death referred to the Coroner does not necessarily mean that there will be a post-mortem examination or an inquest. In many cases, the Coroner can establish the cause of death without either being necessary. If you have appointed a funeral director, they will usually liaise with the Coroner's Office on your behalf and keep you informed throughout the process.
The London Borough of Tower Hamlets does not operate its own crematorium. Families can choose from a number of nearby crematoria, and your funeral director can help you select the most suitable venue based on location, availability, faith requirements and personal preferences. The crematoria below are among the most commonly used by Tower Hamlets residents.

If the death occurred in hospital, the Bereavement Office will let you know when the Medical Certificate of Cause of Death (MCCD) has been completed and explain how to register the death. If the death has been referred to the Coroner, the Bereavement Team will explain the next steps and keep you informed throughout the process.
Before a funeral can usually take place, the death must be registered with the local Register Office. In most cases, this should be done within five days, unless the death has been referred to the Coroner. Before booking your appointment, please make sure the Medical Examiner has completed and sent the Medical Certificate of Cause of Death (MCCD) to the Register Office. The hospital or GP surgery will advise you when this has been done.
Address:
St George's Town Hall
236 Cable Street
London E1 0BL
Telephone: 020 7364 7880
Email:register.office@towerhamlets.gov.uk
Opening Hours:
Monday to Friday, 9:10am – 4:30pm (appointments only)
Online Appointments: Available via the official Tower Hamlets Council website.
Description: Tower Hamlets Register Office registers deaths that occur within the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. During your appointment, the registrar will complete the legal registration, issue the Green Form for your funeral director if applicable, and explain the Tell Us Once service, which helps notify government departments of the death.
The Green Form is normally handed to you during your appointment so that you can give it to your chosen funeral director if you already know who they are. Unlike some councils, Tower Hamlets does not routinely send the Green Form electronically. Tower Hamlets also operates an emergency burial service on Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays for faith groups that require same-day burial, subject to the necessary medical documentation being available.
Before booking your appointment, check that the Medical Examiner has sent the paperwork to the Register Office. Waiting for this confirmation can save you an unnecessary journey and help the registration process run more smoothly.
